Your bettor profile

The Pundit

The profile the bookmaker hates.

Congratulations, more or less. Of the eight profiles, you're the one the house likes least: you read, you analyze, you keep a record, you bet little and only when the math justifies it. You don't chase losses, you don't bet out of boredom, you don't mistake a streak for an edge. You are, basically, a bad customer, and here that is the highest praise possible. But don't relax: the Pundit has a weak point, confidence. The day you think you're immune is the day you start to resemble the Analyst who thinks he's god. Discipline isn't a personality trait, it's a practice: it's kept bet by bet or it's lost. You're still human, you still have variance, and the house still has its margin. You're doing it right. Do just enough to keep doing it right.

The number you should know

Even betting with value and discipline, the margin and the variance are still there: the Pundit's difference isn't winning always, it's losing much more slowly.

Three concrete tips

  1. 01Keep recording everything: the day you stop measuring is the day you stop knowing whether you're still doing well.
  2. 02Watch your confidence: review your yield over large samples and assume your edge is smaller than you think.
  3. 03Your biggest risk isn't a bad bet, it's raising the stake because you've got it under control now. Don't.
